vegan & veggie green wednesdays at yo! sushi

17 February 2019 | By Cassell

Welcome to the first of our Vegan High Street series, where we explore the best, and the bad, of the big restaurants, stores and other chains that grace our high street up and down the UK.

So, we begin with good news for sushi lovers! The high street chain of Japanese, conveyor belt restaurants has extended their famous Blue Monday to introduce Green Wednesday. If you’re new to Yo! Sushi, you should know that dishes are served on small coloured plates; and the colour of the plate determines the price.

green: £2.30
blue: £3.00
purple: £4.00
orange £4.50
pink £5.00
grey £5.50

On the well-established Blue Monday, 40 dishes on a promotional menu are all put on blue plates, reducing the cost to £3 each. On Green Wednesday, all plates from the promotional menu are £2.30 each, which is the typical price of a green plate.

We used to love going to Blue Monday, but have noticed that the price rose gradually over time from £2.20 a plate to £3. So if you’re a vegan, go on Wednesday for the best deal. It is on until 28th August 2019, but hopefully will be extended.

What’s available on Green Wednesday?

  • Yasai Temaki Hand-roll

It’s also really exciting to see that Yo! has expanded their vegan offerings. They now serve vegan mayo in the Yasai Roll, and have introduced a Shiitake Mushroom Ramen. You can easily see what vegan dishes are available by using the filter on their online menu.

I love Yo!, but am so used to ordering the same things that it’ll be tricky to decide which new dishes to try!

My all-time favourites are the Kaiso Seaweed Salad, Tofu Katsu Curry, Harasume Aubergine and Vegetable Fried Rice. That aubergine is amazing; it just melts in the mouth. I wish I knew how they did it! We also love Inari Pockets, but they appear to have been upgraded to the Inari Tacos. They are now topped with avocado, spicy mayo and a salsa, so I am looking forward to seeing how they turn out.

Also, for some reason I always order a Vegetable Yakisoba but then remember it’s too tangy for me and give it to Tom.

Anyway, let’s go back to Green Wednesday’s menu. Remember that there is no price difference on the green plates to the usual menu. So really, you are only get 14 dishes at a discount on the everyday price. But that discount is 70p more per plate than on Blue Mondays! That doesn’t sound like much but over the course of 10 plates, that’s a £7 difference.

What’s available on Blue Monday?

At most restaurants the Blue Monday menu includes 15 of the vegan dishes. They are:

  • Yasai Temaki Hand-roll
  • Inari Taco
  • Kaiso Seaweed Salad
  • Harasume Aubergine
  • Vegetable Yakisoba
  • Vegetable Fried Rice
  • Yasai Roll
  • Vegetable Gyoza
  • Spicy Pepper Cauliflower
  • Pumpkin Katsu
  • Tenderstem & Sesame
  • Pumpkin Katsu Curry
  • Tofu Katsu Curry
  • Chocolate Pot
  • Fresh Fruit Plate

All the green plates are still available but not listed in the Blue Monday otherwise you’d be paying more!

The vegetarian Dorayaki Pancake is also included in the offer.

Vegan drinks too!

The menu also labels whether drinks are vegan-friendly! Happily, everything except 2 wines (Sauvignon Blanc and the rosé) are suitable for vegans. So if you’ve always wanted to try sake or want a Japanese beer to go with dinner, you can make your selection without having to check Google first!

Personally, I always stick to the unlimited green tea and still water. The little tap in front of me is impossible to resist!

Where to find them

With 72 restaurants, you’ll be sure to find a YO! Sushi near you. But note that Green Wednesday does not apply at the following restaurants: Edinburgh Airport, Gatwick North and Heathrow Terminal 2 & 3, Harvey Nichols, Selfridges London, Manchester Trafford & Birmingham Selfridges.
